Location: Greenland
Date: 18 January 1998
Hares: Paint Job & Stevie Blunder
Scribe: RoughKnight

After a three hour tour through Lapland, our convoy of three cars finally made
it to Greenland. We were extremely grateful to the Hares, Paint Job and Stevie
Blunder for the helpful, clear and concise directions they had complied for us
- "follow the signs for Greenland.......". We all had several attempts at
navigation - me, then Flight 69, then me again. Fabulous and Short Cut
(assisted by No Grappa) declined to be a part of this jolly Sunday morning game
- they did however offer us some interesting hand gestures to compensate. On
arrival there seemed to be a lack of Hashers - I imagine they are still, today,
driving around Solero looking for the signs to Greenland.

We all exchanged Christmas stories, displayed new Christmas tracksuits, gear,
cars, etc., then we set about killing the Hares. When that was done we headed
off on the trail. First check - most people stood about chatting, drinking,
etc. and after ten minutes or so Tonedeaf found the trail (assisted in part by
Ribena). Freddie seemed to be somewhat depressed today - I think Stevie
Blunder had broken the news to him that Bwana had returned as GM and his short
reign was over. We headed up the road and to the second check where No Grappa
(I think) found the trail. The pack were still together at this stage and
later up the path Bwana and Fabulous had an impromptu song stop while jumping
up and down on matresses (boys will be boys).

Tonedeaf lead us down through some woods where we reached a small river to
cross. Bwana, Tonedeaf, me and Ribena all bounded (perhaps an exaggeration)
across only to be called back by Sparky who had found the right trail.
Tonedeaf choose to ignore this and continued on his merry way.............. We
were led into an open field area and found Mary Poppins wandering around. On
being approached his only words were "Oh Shit - wrong team". We ended up at
the road and Bwana was getting all excited as us three girlies had ended up
leading the pack up a false trial - has he never before witnessed such an
event? Anyway, White Fang, No Grappa and me choose to ignore his silly
mutterings.

We went on through the woods and by this time I had not seen the walkers for a
good hour - Paint Job had disappeared with them. We reached a song stop
(having been reunited with Tonedeaf in the meantime) and tried to sing on the
trailer which the hares had provided. Sparky and Tonedeaf tried to wipe out
half the Mis-Management Committee (another coup??) by interfering with the
trailer. Things went from bad to worse and the boys found lots of puddles of
dirty water. You can imagine the outcome - three grown men running down the
road jumping into puddles to splash each other (and I have been assured that
they do have normal day jobs). Stevie Blunder and Mary Poppins chose to hang
back with us lassies.

The beer was near and we arrived at the wagon (which has been extended and
painted grey). The bad news was that we had an injury - Gail had twisted her
ankle and was out of action. We did our best to keep her morale up by feeding
her copious amounts of brandy and singing "Every day's a= Wednesday" - she now
looked happier. I have heard from Ellen that Ariel has now taken to chanting
"Every day's a Wednesday" when walking through the park with Sparky - just wait
until she starts this in school and the teacher asks the meaning of this
strange chant! Anyway, walkers and runners were once again together - Iron Bum
had her crowd under control, assisted by Flight 69. = Mary Poppins looked
relieved to be back with his fellow walkers, Ribena was doing jumping tricks
and Freddie was beginning to look brighter.

After the beer stop, we took a delightful, muddy path and soon reached the
ON-IN. We headed back past the fun fair and then we started to spot them...
soon the numbers got more and more - we were in the minority.....packs of
Barbour jackets, small pretty dogs, gooey couples, immaculate children, noses
with a bad smell under them.........the only sound that we could make out was
"Tedesci....si, sono Tedesci". The Milanese had landed. Fabio went into an
immediate depression and declared that the circle be held right in the middle
of the road - no compromise. We statred the circle and Italian mothers rushed
to usher their sprogs away and protect them from us. The Hares were suitable
punnished - Mary Poppins for being on the wrong team, No Grappa got the chicken
award, Iron Bum, Bwana - new car, Cheesey Dick for finding Greenland, Tonedeaf
got one I'm sure, visitors Shriley and our Rome Hasher Cristina got, and there
were others.

We got to the restaurant to meet up with our friends from Geneva/Leman. Every
one had fun breaking their teeth on the winkles. The grub was good. Lorenzo
was once again our entertainer with his guitar, blended in with the old
classics like "Sit on my face and tell me that you love me". All in all a good
day.

Folks,

this invites your local pack to run from Pescara to Rome. Date will be the
weekend of either May 16 or 23 (tbc).

The plan is to start from Pescara on a Friday afternoon, and to arrive in Rome
on a Saturday evening. Rome H3 have kindly offered to support the event from
their side with a location that fits the generic hasher's partying needs on an
average Saturday night.

So far, the plan is to arrive - basta. We are thinking of a bus that carries
the goodies (water, more water, a single video with Italian game shows, etc.)
and to have one or two participants run at a time, for a few kilometers (2-10).
The distance is somewhat around 250 km. We consider 10 runners to be the
absolute minimum. However, I'm sure that 20 or more should be within reach.

In case that there is a lot of interest we can also think of the formation of
competitive teams. In that case, however, the logistic challenge would be
considerable....think of explaining this to the carabinieri...

So far I am only sharing this within Italy, but as soon as the date is fixed
I'll hang it on the global boards.
