Sunday, 20 October 1996 - TERRY FOX RUN

The 1st Terry Fox run in Switzerland will be held on Sunday the 20th of October, 1996. It's being organized by Krebsforschung Schweiz (Swiss Cancer Research) in association with the Canadian Embassy and the Stadtturnverein Bern. This is a sponsored run with the goal of raising money for cancer research. Terry Fox runs are held yearly throughout Canada and in 50 countries around the world.

For those of you who don't know who Terry Fox was: at the age of 18 Terry had his right leg amputated because of bone cancer. During his hospital stay and follow-up therapy he was confronted with the pain and doubts of other cancer patients. Afterwards, he planned to run across Canada to increase people's awareness of the need for financial support for cancer research. This "Marathon of Hope" was supposed to bring in $24 million. On April 12, 1980 Terry started his run. For the next 143 days he ran the equivalent of a marathon (42 km) every day. After half his goal was reached, Terry was forced to quit because his cancer had spread to his lungs. He died on June 28, 1981, one month before his 23rd birthday.

For more information on how to join this run, please contact the Krebsforschung Schweiz, Effingerstrasse 40, 3001 Bern at 031/389-9120. You should register by October 11th and the minimum distance is 1 lap of 1000 meters. There is a form for recording the names of sponsors and how much they will donate per lap that you run.

Friday, 23 February 1996 22:00 - HHH Fasnacht in Bern

Meet at the English Speaking Club of Bern, Laupenstrasse 17, CH-3008 Bern (City West, elevator to the yellow parking area, next to the Cinema "Club", 2 U.G. then follow the signs).

One of the best events of the year is the Baerner Fasnacht! The best part of the Fasnacht celebration is the Friday night Midnight Torchlit parade around the Old Town. It starts with a short theater piece in the Munsterplatz and then all the Guggemusik bands and general wander-arounders march through the Old Town. If the weather cooperates, this is usually lots of fun! Visits to the various restaurants in the Old Town and all the vendors on the street will provide the much-needed liquid accompaniment. If you would like to join us this year, meet at the English Speaking Club on Friday evening February 23. Please be there before 22:00 because that is when we will leave the club in search of merry-making. The theme for attire is "HASH Haberdashery". Remember to dress warm however, because we won't be doing a lot of the R-word, on the other hand, we should be doing a great deal of the D-word!

River Rafting on the Aare

Sunday, 20 August 1995, 9:49 am

That's right, due to the terrible weather on the 13th, the rafting trip has been postponed one week. The info is basically the same, as follows:

Join us for a rafting trip down the Aare. Take the regional train (GBS) from Bern to Thun leaving the main train station from track 12 at 9:49 am (arriving in Lerchenfeld at 10:33 for those of you who want to drive to Lerchenfeld). NOTE: this is not the regular SBB train to Thun, this is the slow, regional train that goes through Wabern, Kehrsatz, Belp, etc.

Bring whatever you want to eat and drink (i.e., sandwiches, chips/crisps, beer and/or soda -- not in glass bottles, etc.). This event is open to everyone and is specifically aimed at English speaking peopple (Hashers, English SpeakingClubs, Upstage,, friends, and so on). If yo don't have a raft, invite someone along who does, or borrow one. There is usually enough space for everyone. If the weather is REALLY lousy we will try again on August 20th, same train.

Organized by: Boo Boo (Chris Fuhrer-Fries, 031/819-5845) and TailGate (Shawn Watson, 031/961-3570)
